The PDF Problem in Private Markets — and How Canoe Intelligence Solved It: A Conversation with Mike Muniz
Episode 14: Michael Muniz, Co-Founder of Canoe Intelligence
Episode 14 of the AYU Family Office Podcast
If you invest in private markets, you know the problem. Quarterly capital account statements, capital call notices, financial statements, tax documents, investor letters, all arriving in different formats, from different portals, at different frequencies. All as PDFs. All requiring someone to manually extract, normalise, and enter the data before any meaningful analysis can begin. In Episode 14 of the AYU Family Office Podcast, Mike Muniz, co-founder of Canoe Intelligence, explains how the firm built a technology solution to this universal problem and why COVID turned out to be its most powerful growth catalyst.
The Problem: Private Markets Reporting Is Broken
In public markets, an investor can log into their Fidelity or Vanguard account and get a daily snapshot of their portfolio. In private markets, that experience simply does not exist.
"Every fund reports in a different structure, a different format, at different frequencies. You have to log into portals, remember passwords, manage two-factor authentication. When you get the documents, you have to work out what they are, which entity they're related to, what fund they belong to, then pull the data, digitise it, and manually enter it into a spreadsheet." For a family office with dozens of alternative fund commitments, this is a structural impediment to effective oversight and operational scale.
The Origin Story: Seeing the Problem from Three Angles
At Cambridge Associates, Mike managed investment consulting relationships for eight clients and saw a team of 250 people whose entire job was to gather documents, process data, and create reports with errors, rework, and latency at every stage. At Novus Partners, the same problem manifested with offshore teams. The breakthrough came at a New York single family office called Portage Partners, which had taken the unusual step of hiring developers as their back office. The technology they had built was immediately recognisable as a solution. "Our jaws hit the floor." Mike and co-founder Seth Brotman spun the technology out, raised a seed round, and went to market.
COVID as a Tailwind
Canoe launched commercially in late 2018, backed by a Series A led by Hamilton Lane and Nasdaq. Then COVID hit. Several of Canoe's largest prospects had offshore processing teams in India that went offline during the pandemic and their reporting processes stopped with them. "Firms needed a catalyst to finally make the decision. Up to that point, we were the only technology in the world solving this problem. There was naturally some scepticism. Could technology account for all the nuance and complexity with private markets? Turns out it can."
Who Uses Canoe Today
Canoe now serves approaching 500 clients globally: single and multi-family offices, wealth managers, endowments, foundations, pension funds, sovereign wealth funds, insurance companies, funds of funds, and asset managers. Over 200 family offices use Canoe to improve operational efficiency, scale their alternatives portfolios, and future-proof their back office. The practical outcome is simple: instead of a team spending days extracting and normalising data from PDFs, that data arrives automatically, cleanly, and ready for analysis.
The Secondaries Market and What's Next
Beyond the core data extraction product, Mike and Gus cover the secondaries market where Canoe's ability to rapidly process historical fund data has become a competitive advantage for buyers conducting due diligence on large LP portfolios. The conversation points to a broader thesis: as family offices scale their alternatives exposure, the quality of their operational infrastructure becomes a source of genuine investment edge.
